Found objects = art
The ‘junk drawer,’ ‘catch-all,’ or whatever you call it, you’ve got one. We’ve all got one, or two.
One day, I decided it was time to clean out my junk drawers, and in them, I found 19 no longer used cellular devices: phones, iPods, Sirius radios and their respective chargers and various associated parts. I couldn’t throw them in the garbage and I knew no one would want them—they were first and second-generation devices—obsolete for sure.
At that moment, my spatial reasoning took hold! I gathered a handful of these objects, and with a tiny screwdriver, I started taking them apart. It was challenging for both my eyes and hands but it was so much fun! After disassembling a hundred little pieces, I started playing around with them.
Organizing = art
I tried organizing them by size; then, I tried organizing them by their materials, and then by brand, and color.
I left a mess on the table for a week. When I came back to it, the mess revealed itself to me as a cityscape!
Sometimes I paint, sometimes I glue, sometimes I work on puzzles, sometimes I make art out of old gum packages. As long as I’m creating, I’m happy.
I also enjoy finding cool things on the street. I once found an old film projector and beautiful, old lightbulbs.
I love to create something special out of items that were once relegated to the curb.
